If you think you or a loved one may have anorexia, it's helpful to get some basic information on the condition. Anorexia, also known as anorexia nervosa, is an eating disorder where people eat very little even though they are already thin. It is characterized by symptoms such as:
Refusal to eat
An intense desire to be thin
Repeated dieting attempts
Excessive weight loss.
Although this condition primary affects women, men can also become anorexic. The first goal for treating this serious condition is to restore a healthy weight, which may require hospitalization. Treatment may also involve psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, or supportive group therapy.
